Unforgettable day
Last Tuesday, May 11, Marsol had a memorable trip.
Soon, after a radio information saying that the lookout was seeing a sperm whale diving, the Marsol boat spotted on the horizon enormous blows... A group of at least 10 Fin Whales (Balanaenoptera physalus) coming from West and going to East. This specie is the second largest animal on the planet after the blue whale.
These large adult specimens approached the boat a few times, and even pass under it.
During our trip and surrounding the great whales we had an encounter with common dolphins (Delphinus delphis).
An excellent trip!

Memories from the past...

The whale lookout spots!
Lost amid pastures and woods, in ruins or recently rehabilitated, the lookout spots once used in whaling, now symbolize an era thru which the people of Terceira Island went through. Strategically placed at high and prominent points thru out an outstanding coastline, there was a time when they were distributed practically all around the island of Terceira in order to be able to see each other and thus cover large areas of observation.
This lookout spot, recently rehabilitated, is located within the Monte Brazil Recreational Forest Park, more specifically at the top of what is called "Pico da Vigia". This point is located at 38 º 38 '26''N and 27 º 14' 47''W, standing about 77 meters above sea level.
From this spot you can have a wide observation area of much of the south coast of the island, it is possible to observe the islands of São Jorge and Pico. In the past this lookout spot served mainly as support to the whalers of São Mateus.
